Times Square Station Complex
CTE is providing construction phase services for the multi-phase $177 million improvement/rehabilitation of the Times Square Station complex. The work includes substantial civil, structural and utility improvements, new platforms and mezzanine, and historic preservation throughout the station. The tremendous growth of ridership, coupled with the deterioration of the structure, has created the need for a comprehensive station rehabilitation program. The multi-phase project is achieving several key objectives: improvement of pedestrian circulation by widening and increasing the height of the mezzanine passageway, an increase in overall safety and security through closure of seldom-used passageways and stairways, improvements for ADA compliance, and upgrade and modernization of architectural finishes and lighting to enhance the appearance of the station.
CTE performed constructability reviews of all contract documents and participated in the selection of a contractor to perform this work. As a result of the constructability reviews, the final bid package included a revised phasing scheme with new interim milestones and liquidated damage constraints, which reduced the contract duration from 54 to 45 months. In addition to the on-site construction supervision and inspection services, CTE coordinated the station contractor's activities with MTA NYCT forces and other contractors performing work at the site. As part of the project objective to enhance the appearance of the station complex, new street entrances were included in the surrounding buildings under construction by Times Square developers. CTE proactively initiated the necessary coordination between the adjacent project sites, ensuring that subway entrances were completed on schedule. During construction, significant amounts of public, private and transit utilities below the streets and throughout the subway complex required temporary support and relocation. CTE coordinated the efforts of the utility companies, MTA NYCT forces and the contractor to ensure timely completion of the various phases of utility work.
