US 131 S-Curve Reconstruction
CTE designed the complete reconstruction of 1.8 kilometers of US-131 through the central business district of Grand Rapids. The original alignment through the project area consisted of back-to-back substandard reverse curves on an elevated roadway known locally as the "S" curve. In addition to the existing substandard geometrics and pavement widths, there were also deficiencies in the bridge structures and foundation failures due to some unique geologic conditions in the Grand Rapids area near the Grand River. Design challenges included developing new horizontal and vertical alignment to maximize design speed, as well as overcoming the foundation problems associated with the existing soluble gypsum deposits underlying the area.
The cross-section was widened from its existing three-lane configuration to four lanes in each direction with full shoulders to enhance drivability and safety through the "S" curve. Interchange modifications were made to improve operations through the section. The major bridge designs included a 370-meter span over an existing parking lot and Grandville Avenue, and a 290-meter span over the Grand River and Fulton Street. Both bridges consist of curved steel girders designed as continuous units. Additional minor bridges were constructed over Market Street, Front Street and Pearl Street. Since the project is a major feature in the downtown Grand Rapids area, extensive aesthetic treatments were added to the bridges and retaining walls so that the “S” Curve makes an architectural statement in the downtown area. Another unique feature was the addition of a fully automated anti-icing system for all bridge and pavement areas within the project limits. The design was done under an expedited schedule and completed in less than 12 months. The freeway was completely closed within the project limits during construction and traffic was diverted to local detour routes. CTE also designed pavement and traffic signal improvements to the system of local detour routes.
