Birmingham International Airport

CTE provided planning, design and contract documents for the relocation of East Lake Boulevard and Second Road (.6 miles and 1 mile respectively) to accommodate improvements at Birmingham International Airport. These improvements were necessitated by the planned 1,200-foot extension of Runway 6/24. CTE performed all of the civil, drainage, and roadway design within an abbreviated schedule. Preliminary and final plans conformed to City of Birmingham requirements, AASHTO design criteria and FAA clearance requirements. Contract plans included new intersection layout and signalization, signal modification, hydraulic calculations and culvert structural design, traffic contract plans, and earthwork balancing.

Roadway specifications for the projects were integrated by CTE with FAA specifications for the project contract documents. CTE had to keep the roadway a minimum of 15 feet below the bottom threshold of the flight path, including the non-signalized intersection. This required shortened signal pole heights and vertical-mounted signal heads. CTE performed the geometric design, hydraulic design, erosion control plans, sequence of construction and traffic plans. The hydraulic design included software design analysis of culvert sizing, energy dissipaters, detention ponds, ditch linings, inlet spacing, and closed pipe networks. Signal timing plans and signal layout sheets were designed for two intersections. Erosion control plans and stormwater permit information was provided per City of Birmingham specifications and ordinances.
