I-95 & S-83 Interchange

The interchange was constructed to serve the new Honda ATV plant in Florence County, near Timmonsville, South Carolina.  CTE was responsible for the design of the interchange, the widening of Road S-83, and the design of the new bridge over I-95.  The bridge is 301'-6" long and 74' wide.  The four span structure consists of bulb tee prestressed concrete girders for the main spans over the Interstate and Type II AASHTO girders in the exterior spans.  Piers are cast in place concrete caps with four concrete columns founded on spread footings.  A diamond interchange was designed and construction sequencing of the ramps was coordinated with Honda to provide required access for plant construction. Significant challenges included: preparing horizontal and vertical alignments for S-83 and the interchange ramps that did not require additional right of way and met all current acceptable standards and criteria; designing a project which could be constructed while maintaining traffic on I-95 and Road S-83; and producing both roadway and bridge designs under severe time constraints imposed by the contract which included liquidated damages in the amount of $25,000 per day.  CTE completed the designs for this project and provided construction management and inspection services for the Rea Construction Company team.  Every commitment to Honda and Florence County was completed ahead of the schedule commitments to Honda and no liquidated damages were assessed.
