Kansas City Combined Sewer Overflow
On both sides of the state line, CTE is a member of teams that are working to address CSO's discharging to the Missouri River and its local tributaries. Efforts are complicated by the wide range in receiving stream characteristics, ranging from the Missouri, with a tributary area of over 485,000 square miles, to local streams with a few square miles of tributary area. In Kansas, planning and design is well along. The state has approved the Long Term Control Plan which suggested approximately $70 million in improvements. Some projects are currently under construction. In Missouri, long-term planning efforts are currently underway. With over 200 overflow structures, the city faces a major control challenge, with potentially major funding impacts. Therefore, a careful program for system characterization and alternative development is progressing with significant regulatory and public participation.
