Stickney Water Reclamation Plant, Post-Digestion Centrifuge Dewatering Facility Expansion

With its 570-acre site, 600 employees and 1,200-mgd capacity, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's Stickney Water Reclamation Plant is one of the largest in the world.  The recently expanded Post-Digestion Centrifuge Dewatering Facility uses 18 high-solids centrifuges to dewater 100 of the 650 tons of sludge processed per day.  In just 10 months, CTE designed a new three-level dewatering facility which expanded the existing 12-centrifuge capability by 9 units, 6 immediately and 3 in the future.  The expansion of the centrifuge facility is an integral part of the District's strategy to beneficially re-use biosolids.

The Stickney plant is adjacent to a residential neighborhood and being a good neighbor was a key consideration during the design work.  The resulting odor control system treats hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and volatile organic compounds.
